It is hard to put into words the significance of bougainvilleas in my life. Every place I ever loved had a blooming bougainvillea in it. So seeing the vibrant flowers always felt like arriving. Today that looks like my grandmother's front door, getting on the bus that takes me from the international airport to my little town, on the first corner, a gigant bougainvillea, outside my mother's atelier, a bougainvillea. 
 
Painting them while I am in the US working is a prayer in itself, a reminder that I will be back soon enough to my motherland, to my family, to the community that knows me and loves me just for being myself. In my darkest days, just having a plane ticket home even if it was weeks away, was enough to give me hope. 
 
So I called this one Ya Merito, as I am writing this note, I am just 15 days away from a visit home, and I just feel so happy, it is like the hummingbird brings me the message with certainty that I am almost there. Ya Merito means, almost there.
 
With a joy and childlike energy only some places can make you feel, Ya Merito lets you remember who you are, where you are from, and where you are heading. Be so proud of yourself every step of the journey.
